[VIDEO] Tax Ombud says SARS isn’t doing enough to educate tax payers
According to Judge Ngoepe, taxpayers need to be educated about SARS services and how they operate so that they can understand their rights and responsibilities.

POLOKWANE – South Africa’s Tax Ombudsmen Chair, Judge Bernard Makgabo Ngoepe recently sat down with Review employees to talk about the tax ombud offices’ services as well as some of the cases that they have dealt with over the years as impartial officers of the law, who help deal with and resolve tax payer complaints against SARS (South African Revenue Services).
According to Judge Ngoepe, the public, more-so tax payers, need to be educated about SARS services and how they operate so that they can understand their rights and responsibilities as taxpayers. “The main reason why we as the Tax Ombuds receive so many complaints from tax payers is because they lack knowledge and insight about tax clearance, which is why we are currently facilitating this road show to educate and instil such knowledge to tax payers. I will give a example of how even when a tax payer owes SARS money, when they claim the money, they need to ensure that they leave money for important living expenditure such as school fees for the children, electricity, groceries, etc,” he explained.
A dialogue session with Judge Ngoepe will take place on Monday, 1 July at the Fusion Boutique Hotel from 08:30 where the public will receive deeper enlightenment and understanding about the Tax Ombudsman and what they stand for.
