‘Zama zama’ nabbed at rehabilitated mine outside Giyani

Mining equipment including two generators, two pendukas, 13 drill bits and explosives were seized during the arrest

LIMPOPO – A 30-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, 21 August during an operation between the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, the Department of Mineral Resources and the Giyani Public Order Police.

Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke says the suspect was found to be mining gold-bearing material at the rehabilitated Ellerton mine at Nhlaniki village outside Giyani.

During the arrest, mining equipment including two generators, two pendukas, 13 drill bits and explosives were seized.

He adds that numerous illegal miners have been arrested during similar operations, and in an effort to curb these illegal mining activities, more operations will be conducted in other parts of the province.

The suspect faces a charge of illegal mining and is expected to appear in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court today.
