Stanford Lake College’s (SLC) teams Badger, Ubuntu and Tshanduku gave good account of themselves during the 2019 edition of the South African Schools Adventure Racing Championships held in the Kouga Region of the Eastern Cape recently.
Team Ubuntu finished in second place among the seniors in a time of 07:17. Team Tshanduko finished third among the seniors in 08:28 m and the Badgers fourth among the juniors in 08:28.
Junior teams raced approximately 60 km over three legs (kayak, cycle and trek) and the senior teams approximately 80 km.
The race requires team members to have navigating, orienteering, advanced kayaking, cycling and swimming skills as well as basic knowledge of First Aid. They must be able to operate in harsh, remote environments in all weather conditions.
Beth Coetzee, SLC’s head of marketing said parents played a big role in the teams’ success as they travelled with them and assisted as seconds during the race. She expressed gratitude towards Expedition North Polokwane for the sponsorship of staff shirts. Outdoor Education director Neil Haarhoff and educator Tiaan Fullard deserved a special mention for their huge contribution towards the teams’ success, Coetzee indicated.

SLC’s team Badgers consisting of Lianke Fourie, Michaela Gosling, Benno Kotzé and Jethro Clowes, finished fourth in the junior division.
Team Tshanduku members Michael Scriven, Rachel Thompson, Heidi Katzke and Gunther Katzke with their trophies for taking third place in the senior division.
