Collaborative efforts by the Police to fight crime resulted in the arrest of seven suspects in the Mecklenburg area on Monday for their alleged involvement in a business robbery in the town the previous day.
Provincial Police Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo indicated that the suspects are aged between 29 and 40 years.
Police members attached to the Visible Policing and Crime Prevention units were performing their normal patrol duties along the R37 road at Mashamothane when they allegedly came across a suspicious Toyota Quantum, according to Mojapelo. When Police tried to stop the vehicle the driver gave chase but was cornered at the Mashamothane Moshate Cross. Police arrested seven occupants, including the driver, while one suspect managed to escape.
During the arrest Police confiscated a 9 mm firearm, excavator parts, a compressor and four cell phones as well as the vehicle.
Mojapelo remarked that the suspects might be linked to other serious crimes in the Burgersfort Cluster and were expected to appear in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of suspected stolen properties earlier this week. They were also expected to appear in the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court on a charge of business robbery.
Mojapelo indicated that more suspects might be involved and part of what is suspected to be a bigger syndicate.
Anyone with information is requested to contact investigating officer Mahlathini Ngele on 082 573 3645 or report to the nearest Police station.
