POLOKWANE – Former mayor of the city, Freddy Greaver on Saturday supported cancer sufferers and their caregivers through spinning for more than two hours during the annual SA Run 4 Cancer Ultra Marathon.

Freddy recently lost his father to thyroid cancer and in his memory, wanted to run the race, however, due to an injury, he was unable to and therefore decided to spin instead.

He started at 06:00 and stopped at 08:15. According to Freddy, this was a personal record.

“In my father’s case, we picked up that he had cancer when it was at an advanced stage, and as a family, we had to accept the reality that there was nothing that could be done. We realised through this experience how many people have gone through the same and how many have fallen victim.”

He further urges everyone to read up on cancer and become aware of signs and symptoms of this dreaded disease as well as the treatments available.

He lastly thanked the organisers of the SA Cancer Run for affording his family the opportunity to show their last respects to their father.
