Limpopo will once again join the annual worldwide campaign of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence set to start on Monday and to continue until 10 December.
Although formal programmes have not been finalised yet Provincial Police Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that a programme relating to the campaign will definitely be rolled out in due course.
Spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Community Safety Joel Seabi also said that a joint programme with other departments was being finalised. He added that several activities will form part of the campaign and that the launch of the Safer Festive Season Operation on 2 December will also be a part of the campaign.
This year’s campaign will be hosted under the theme Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands against Rape.
According to information on the national Government’s website Government will convene a series of dialogues on violence against women and children to focus on the problem, discuss the causes and to find appropriate solutions during duration of the campaign. Through the dialogue sessions government will interact with community members who experience violence and abuse.
It is set out that the objectives of the campaign is to attract all South Africans to be active participants in the fight to eradicate violence against women and children; to expand accountability beyond the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster to include all government clusters and provinces, to combine technology, social media, the arts, journalism, religion, culture and customs, business and activism to draw attention to the many ways violence against women and children affects the lives of all people in all communities around the world; to ensure mass mobilisation of all communities to promote collective responsibility in the fight to eradicate violence against women and children and to encourage society to acknowledge that violence against women and children is not a government or criminal justice system problem, but a societal problem, and that failure to view it as such results in all efforts failing to eradicate this scourge in our communities.
