Three suspects were expected to appear in the Phalala Magistrate’s Court last week after they were arrested for allegedly smuggling illicit goods into the country at Groblersbrug Border Post last Tuesday.
Provincial Police Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo could not provide the outcome of the case at the time of going to print.
Police intercepted two trucks and arrested three suspects for allegedly smuggling illicit skin creams and cigarettes worth R14 million into the country.
Mojapelo indicated that the two trucks had approached the border post from Botswana and were routinely directed towards the search bay after crossing into South Africa.
The load bins were searched and 521 boxes containing various skin lightening creams and 30 cartons of illicit cigarettes discovered. The two trucks were also confiscated, according to Mojapelo.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has expressed appreciation for the work done by the officers and the fact that their vigilance ensured that the illicit goods did not find their way into the South African market.
