Police arrest Limpopo prophet for telling residents to not stay at home
In the video the accused calls himself a prophet, and spreads misleading information which breaches the rules and regulations of the Covid-19 lockdown period.
LIMPOPO – The Department of Health has welcomed the arrest of a self-proclaimed prophet who has been sharing fake and misleading information.
The man was arrested by the police in the Thohoyandou area after the police received a tip-off from residents who complained about the contents of the video in which the accused is seen denouncing the call by the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa of staying at home during the national lockdown, says Thilivhali Muavha, Spokesperson for the Health MEC.
“In the video the accused calls himself a prophet, and spreads misleading information which breaches the rules and regulations of the Covid-19 lockdown period.”
Health MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba said as the department they have welcomed the swift action taken by the South African Police Service in apprehending the self-proclaimed prophet.
“His arrest will serve as a deterrent to those who think it’s business as usual and those who spread misleading information and fake news. The department will not tolerate anyone spreading fake news and insults directed at our president especially during these trying times where we are all called upon to fight the Covid-19 pandemic” said Ramathuba.
She reiterated the call by Ramaphosa and the Premier of Limpopo, Chupu Mathabatha for people to stay at home and abide by the rules and regulations during the lockdown period.
