Watch as dept fumigates local taxi ranks and taxis
Taxi ranks were recently pinpointed as a serious health risk to public transport users due to the increasing cases of Covid-19 among taxi operators and drivers.

POLOKWANE – On Wednesday, the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya accompanied by the Executive Mayor of Capricorn District, John Mpe took time out to fumigate the Seshego Polokwane and Mankweng taxi ranks in an effort to curb the spread of the virus.
Ramakhanya stated that the taxi ranks have been identified as hotspots for Covid-19 second wave infections. “The programme is aimed at ensuring that taxi operators, drivers, queue marshals, commuters and cleaners among others understand the health protocols and the need for behaviour change.”
Litres of sanitizer were also handed over to the operators.
She added that it was imperative to fumigate the ranks and also present the operators with sanitizer because they form part of the front line workers. “We are saying to them they must make sure that their vehicles are fumigated and sanitized at all times. We are saying that all their commuters must wear their marks before they enter the taxis.”
Spokesperson for Mankweng Taxi Association, Frans Kgasago said the sanitizer will come in handy. “We do have sanitizer but were unable at times to deal with the backlog. We are grateful to the department for the gesture and we will ensure that all our taxis sanitized at all times and also ensure that the commuters adhere to all the rules and the regulations of Covid-19.”
