Mayor lends a hand at taxi rank

In her effort to combat the spread of Covid-19, Polokwane Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng assisted in fumigating taxis operating at the Ga-Molepo and Flora Park taxi ranks

She also handed over 125 liters of sanitiser to executives and operators on Tuesday.

The gesture formed part of the municipality’s endeavours to tackle the threat posed by the virus and also to prepare for the possibility of a third wave.

“We handed over 100 bottles of hand sanitisers to the taxi marshalls and drivers. The third wave is coming and we need to fight and manage it. We need to come together as Africans and win this battle against the virus.”

She also added they are proud of the strides they made to fight the pandemic since last year.

“We handed over water tankers at various taxi ranks last year.

We have also handed sanitiser to taxi associations in the Aganang, Nobody and Polokwane areas. We are going to embark on a cleaning campaign in the taxi rank in the city. We need to make sure that all the taxi ranks in the city are clean so that we can be able to manage the third wave.”

She urged citizens to adhere to lockdown regulations.

“They must continue to wear their masks, sanitise and maintain social distancing.”

The Secretary of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in the Capricorn Region, David Mosoma said they are grateful to the Polokwane Municipality for the gesture.

“We have 32 associations in the Capricorn area and 90% of them are operating in Polokwane.

“We did not have the sanitiser before and we are happy to be the beneficiaries. We will make sure that all our taxis are equipped with sanitiser before embarking on their trips.”
