Seshego community calls for action after yet another young woman is murdered

Barely two weeks after the body of Tshepo Makola (30) was found in a pool of blood, domestic violence has apparently claimed the life of yet another woman in the Seshego area.

LIMPOPO – On Saturday 20 February, the body of the 24-year-old Kgaogelo Komape was found by her sister in Extension 71A in a pool of blood. Komape had been stabbed, reportedly by her boyfriend.

A community leader, Vincent Kunutu, says he was called to the scene. He confirmed that Komape was certified dead on the scene. “I was aware that they were going through a rough patch and that she had apparently refused to see her boyfriend the day before the murder was committed.”

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, said a 72-hour activation plan was implemented to search for Komape’s killer.

“The probe that followed led the investigation team to a premises in Mankweng where the body of the suspected perpetrator, who was the victim’s boyfriend, was found in a house. It looked like suicide,” he said.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Gen Nneke Ledwaba has since called on communities to desist from taking the law into their own hands and resorting to violence when faced with challenging situations.

He added that the brutal nature of Komape’s murder calls for widespread condemnation and communities are urged to work with the police and other relevant authorities to stamp out the scourge.

Kunutu says the community has been talking about organising a man-to-man dialogue session against gender based violence (GBV) and the death of yet another young woman has reiterated this call.

“We are in the final planning stages of the dialogue session and the details will be shared in due time. This is necessary to support the men in our communities and to show them that there are other options. We are hoping to rope in representatives from the justice system which will assist in encouraging these men to seek other options when they have problems.”
