Limpopo police clean up crime with over 1 800 arrests

Among the people arrested during the latest join clean-up operation were members of an online vehicle sales scam.  

ex: LIMPOPO – Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has commended the police’s determination and efforts to keep the province safe. This is proof after a further 1 898 people were arrested for various crimes during the latest join clean-up operation conducted throughout the province from 22 February until Sunday, 28 February.

The joint operations were conducted by the police and supported by members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Provincial and Municipal Traffic Police Officers and were conducted through roadblocks, patrol and stop and searches.

Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says of the 1 898 people arrested, 433 face charges related to the Contravention of the Disaster Management Act.

In a statement, Ngoepe listed a few of the operation successes:

In the Waterberg District, members of the Lephalale Crime Intelligence Unit, together with provincial detectives, Cumberland detectives and the Johannesburg Central Tactical Response Team (TRT), nabbed two men for series of fraud cases committed between the period of April 2020 to date. “The duo are linked to an online vehicle sales scam whereby the victims would deposit money but never receive the purchased vehicles.”

Meanwhile, a total of 15 suspects were nabbed for possession of dangerous weapons during separate operations in the Mopani and Sekhukhune districts.

Four men, between the ages of 29 and 41, were nabbed for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition during a stop and search operation conducted near the Klaserie dam outside Hoedspruit. The remaining 11 suspects were arrested during a joint operation conducted at the Sehlaku village in Maandagshoek.

“The police received information about people planning to attack residents in the area. They reacted accordingly and managed to arrest 11 suspects for possession of dangerous weapons. During the arrest, police confiscated 17 panagas and various other dangerous weapons. The suspects face an extra charge of Contravention of the Immigration Act after they failed to produce valid identity documents

.

These joint clean-up operations saw the recovery of eight firearms, six stolen motor vehicles, various drugs and dangerous weapons. A total of 847 575ml of liquor was confiscated, 25 shebeens closed and 1 681 fines issued for the Contravention of the National Road Traffic Act.on.

The suspects arrested during these clean-up operations have already started appearing before various magistrate courts throughout the province. They face various charges such as possession of dangerous weapons, robberies, murder, rape, fraud, sexual offences, assault, stock theft, burglaries, possession and dealing in drugs and illicit cigarettes, MITP, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen properties, public drinking, illegal dealing in liquor, Contravention of National Road Traffic Act and Immigration Act, etc.
