[INFOGRAPHIC] Limpopo dams at ‘satisfactory’ levels

LIMPOPO – The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) says the provincial water storage remains at a satisfactory level, with most dams having surpassed their capacity.

As of 1 March, the provincial water storage is at a stable state and stands at 88.3%.  “This is a slight drop from last week’s 88.5.0%, but still a remarkable improvement compared to last years 71.1% during the same period,” says Sputnik Ratau, the Media Liaison Director for DWS.

In Mopani the Ebenezer dam in Groot Letaba, which supplies majority of the communities around Polokwane, has seen an increase from 73.1% last week to 75.8% this week. A huge improvement from last year when it stood at 25.2% at this time.

Tzaneen dam also saw a slight decrease from last week’s 103.2% to 102.2% this week. “This dam was at a very low 23.9% last year at this time.”

In Sekhukhune, Flag Boshielo increased from 101.4% last week to 106.5% this week.

While Doorndraai dam in Waterberg district remains unchanged at 34%.

The department, however, is still calling on residents to conserve water. “Despite the satisfying improvements in Limpopo’s water levels, South Africa is a water scarce country, ranking 30th driest in the world and water remains a scarce resource, and all water consumers are urged to continue using water wisely and sparingly,”Ratau concludes.
