Chef Lethabo’s recipe for success is perseverance

Lethabo Matshabe (19) is aiming for culinary greatness.

This young chef is busy with his second year at the Limpopo Chefs Academy and has a podcast called Majors Radio.

Lethabo explained that he wanted to become an economist growing up, but it was not realistic, as he did not excel at mathematics. “I realised that numbers are not one of my strengths and I had to find something else.” He fell back on an interest in cooking which he acquired when he was 12 years old and he has not looked back since.

He aspires to be a private chef one day and to open his own café, which will have cannabis-infused meals. “I also like to play games on a professional level while doing part-time work as a private chef on weekends and recording podcasts for Majors Radio,” he said. Lethabo plans to travel, and work overseas. One of his biggest challenges are working long hours for little pay. “In the industry, you get overworked with hardly any days off, but the benefit is learning about types of food and cooking techniques,” he said.

The young chef is enjoying the industry and is looking forward to establishing himself as one of the most sought-after chefs in the world. His message to young people looking to pursue this field is to not give up on what they love. “If you love cooking, pursue your dream and push until you cannot push anymore,” he said
