The EURO 2020 is reaching fever pitch as teams are vying for the spot in the knock stage of the tournament. This year’s EURO marks the 60th anniversary of the tournament and matches have been played in eleven cities all over Europe to mark this historic event.
Fans who play a crucial role have been allowed to attend but stadiums have only allowed for about a 50% capacity. So far six teams; Netherlands, Italy, Wales, Austria, Denmark and Belgium have made it through to the knockout stage with 10 spots still remaining.
The teams that are playing against each other in the first matches of the round of the last 16 matches are now known and Saturday will see Wales take on Denmark at 18:00 and Italy face Austria. France and England were two of the countries that were seen as favourites coming into the tournament and it remains to be seen if they will make it through to the knockout stage.
The race for the Golden Boot is still open as four players have now scored three goals in the tournament and includes the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, Patrick Schick from Czech Republic, Romelu Lukaku hailing from Belgium and Georginio Wijnaldum from the Netherlands.
The semi finals and final match of the EURO will be played in London at the Wembley Stadium with the final being played on the 11th of July. The COPA America which is being hosted by Brazil this year is also reaching the final matches of the Group Stage.
Ten South American countries are competing in this year’s competition with Brazil, Chile and Argentina being the favourites to win this event. No team has at this point reached the quarter final matches but Group A is led by Argentina followed by Chile and Brazil is leading Group B followed by Colombia. The quarter final matches will be played from the 2nd of July which should give teams enough time to recuperate and get ready for the finals.
The COPA cup is the one trophy that has eluded Lionel Messi during his career and this will undoubtedly be his last chance to win it. The final match is scheduled to be played on the 10th of July and South Africans will have to stay up late to watch the final as it is being played at 2:00 am.
