Doubles’ defeat, but proud performance for KG at Wimbledon
Kgothatso Montjane, also known as KG, played in the first of her two Wimbledon wheelchair finals today.
POLOKWANE – Seshego-born tennis ace Kgothatso Montjane, also known as KG, made history at Wimbledon today.
Montjane is South Africa’s first black woman to reach a final at Wimbledon according to Tennis South Africa.
The 35-year-old and her British partner Lucy Shuker took to court three to face Japan’s Yui Kamiji and the United Kingdom’s Jordanne Whiley in the wheelchair doubles final.
Kamji and Whiley took the first set 6-0, and albeit a stronger showing in the second set, the set was decided by a tiebreaker.
Montjane and Shuker eventually lost 7-6.
Montjane will, however, have another opportunity to grab a winner’s medal when she faces world number one Diede de Groot from The Netherlands in the ladies wheelchair singles final, scheduled to take place tomorrow (July 11).
