POLOKWANE – She might have lost in the final, but Seshego-born Kgothatso Montjane surely made the city, province and country proud.

Montjane, who’s ranked fifth in the world, took to court one on Sunday (July 11) to face world number one Diede de Groot in the ladies wheelchair singles final .

She got off to a great start to win the first two games, however, De Groot fought back and eventually won the first set 6-2.

De Groot carried over her momentum going into the second set, which she also won 6-2.

Although there was no winner’s medal at the end the tournament, Montjane served up a performance to be proud of at this year’s Wimbledon.

The South African played two finals in the space of two days. On Saturday, she and her British partner Lucy Shuker lost in the ladies wheelchair doubles finals to Japan’s Yui Kamiji and the United Kingdom’s, Jordanne Whiley.

Montjane also made history this year as she became the South Africa’s first black woman to reach the singles final at Wimbledon.
