Operation Basadi increases police visibility along N1
The operation was focused on road awareness, driver fitness, roadworthiness of the vehicles, speeding, drunken driving, and the execution of warrants among others.
LIMPOPO – As part of Women’s Month celebrations the Department of Transport and Community Safety launched Joint Operation Basadi.
The three-hour operation was led by the Transport MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya. together with the provincial police commissioner, Lt Genl Thembi Hadebe, Acting HOD Jane Mulaudzi and Molemole Mayor Cllr Payawas and was conducted along the N1 near Sekonye village at Botlokwa in the Capricorn District on Friday (August 13).
The operation which was mainly manned by women was focused on road awareness, driver fitness, roadworthiness of the vehicles, speeding, drunken driving, and the execution of warrants among others.
“Over 120 officers from South African Police Services, South African National Defence Force, Department of Home Affairs and traffic officials from Capricorn District and Molemole Municipality participated,” said the media liaison officer for the department, Mike Maringa.
During the operation 230 vehicles were stopped and searched, 33 warrant of arrests executed, 10 undocumented foreigners arrested and two public transport vehicles impounded.
Maringa said that the police also confiscated suspected stolen goods which were found in a public transport vehicle which was destined for Zimbabwe. “The goods which included new furniture and electronic gadgets were confiscated after the passengers failed to produce receipts,” Maringa explained.
Lerule-Ramakhanya says women in law enforcement continue to demonstrate that South African women are equal to any task bestowed on them. She added that this operation was one of many similar operations which will be conducted across the province in August.
