Motorists urged to patient as traffic volumes increase on N1 southbound
The department reports long queues at the Nyl toll plaza as holidaymakers make their way towards Gauteng.
LIMPOPO – Traffic volumes will pick from Sunday morning into the evening as road users make their way home after the long weekend.
According to Matomi Moremi-Taueatsoala, the spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Sunday (September 26) traffic volumes have from 09:00 this morning increased along N1 and R101 heading southbound with queues already reported at the Nyl and Kranskop toll plazas.
“Queues at Nyl Plaza stretch up to the Sasol Zebetiela and the department calls on motorists to be patient and to not use the oncoming lanes to jump the queues.”

He added that the department will not tolerate such acts. “Traffic officials will be deployed in the areas to monitor motorists compliance with the rules of the road.”

Accident breakdown for Saturday (September 25)
Moremi-Taueatsoala said a further five accidents and seven road fatalities were reported on Saturday. This brings the total of road accidents since Thursday to 12. This is fewer accidents and fatalities than were recorded during the same period last year.
“Most accidents were caused by reckless and negligent driving with drivers overtaking on barrier lines.”
Accident breakdown September 23-September 24
The period of September 23 to September 24 saw seven accidents reported in the province of which there were two fatal.
“Both fatal incidents happened along the N1 outside of Polokwane on Thursday; the first was near the N1 bypass and Landdros Maré Street junction while the second happened along the N1 bypass adjacent to Flora Park.”
A serious head-on accident was also reported along the R573 road near H62 Vaalbos Trust on Friday at around 22:00.
“The incident involved a sedan and a station wagon. Two people died while another six occupants sustained light injuries.”
Transport MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya send messages of condolences to the families of the deceased and also called on motorists to continue to obey the rules of the road.
