1 killed as taxi and bakkie collide on R524

Ten others sustained serious injuries in the incident.

LIMPOPO – The long weekend has started with a fatality on provincial roads.

In a statement, transport media liaison officer Mike Maringa said one person has died following an incident on the R524 near Tshikhudini village in the Vhembe district.

“A minibus taxi and a bakkie collided earlier this morning. The driver of the bakkie was certified dead, while 10 others from the minibus sustained serious injuries,” Maringa explained.

He indicated that reckless and negligent driving has been cited as a possible cause of the collision. The patients were rushed to the Tshilidzini Hospital.

Transport MEC Mavhungu-Lerule Ramakhanya sent her condolences to the driver’s family and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“It is a long weekend and we expect traffic volumes to increase and urge our road users to be patient. The N1 and other roads will be extremely busy,” Maringa told Review.
