POLOKWANE – They were able to collect these donations through the Bereka Mosadi initiative which started in 2018.
With the initiative, learners donated a packet of sanitary towels in exchange for the privilege to wear a doek to school for a day.
This year’s doek days took place on October 22 and 29 at Capricorn High School and Hoërskool Noorderland respectively.
Bereka Mosadi’s communicator at Noorderland, Mantswi Ramakgolo, explained that many young girls miss school days during the year because they cannot afford sanitary products during their periods.
“Bereka Mosadi would like to bring an end to this and restore dignity to the young girls who will now be able to go to school,” she said.
Period-related poverty refers to the lack of sanitary products and hygiene facilities to manage menstruation.
“We really don’t realise the number of learners who face these challenges on a monthly basis, and to bring this initiative to the community will help our fellow learners. It feels good to know that we are playing a role in eliminating poverty in our communities,” Bereka Mosadi communicator at Capricorn, Dawn Dikgale, explained.
