R180k in illicit cigarettes seized in Phaudi police chase

Police seized R180 000 worth of illicit cigarettes after a chase in Phaudi that ended when the suspect's vehicle suffered a puncture.

LIMPOPO – Police in the Phaudi policing area are investigating a case of possession of illicit cigarettes following the arrest of a 30-year-old male suspect on Saturday, September 5.

A police officer on duty at approximately 6:00 PM was patrolling around Kanana Village when he spotted a suspicious vehicle travelling towards Kolopo Village. The officer attempted to stop the bakkie, but the driver failed to stop and fled the scene.

Chase ends after vehicle suffers puncture

A chase was immediately initiated, and police successfully caught up with the fleeing vehicle after it suffered a puncture between Rankhuwe and Madigoro Villages.

One suspect was arrested, while another fled the scene on foot.

R180k worth of illicit cigarettes found

Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered boxes and cartons containing Blue Remington Gold illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of R180 000.

Vehicle confiscated

The 30-year-old suspect was arrested, while police are continuing with investigations to apprehend the remaining suspect. The vehicle was also confiscated as part of the investigation.

The arrested suspect is expected to appear before court soon on charges of possession of illicit cigarettes.
