Polokwane SAPS cashier to be sentenced for theft

Kgomotso Yvonne Mashala (34) has been convicted of two counts of theft of more than R264 000.

POLOKWANE – Kgomotso Yvonne Mashala (34) will hear her fate during sentencing in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on January 19, 2022.

Mashala, a former SAPS cashier at the Polokwane Police Station, appeared in court yesterday (November 9) on two counts of theft.

According to a statement by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) Limpopo spokesperson Capt Matimba Maluleke, Mashala was responsible for receiving and depositing of state money into the state’s bank account.

“She worked as a cashier at the Polokwane Police Station between January 19, 2018 and February 7, 2018. An audit was conducted and revealed that an amount of more than R264 000 was missing and unaccounted for in this period. The matter was referred to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit for further investigation,” Maluleke explained.

Following a thorough investigation, the National Prosecuting Authority then issued a summons for Mashala to appear in court on August 31, 2018.

“Mashala was out on bail until she was convicted and now she awaits sentencing,” he concluded.
