Four people die after SUV and truck collide on N1 south
The collision happened on Thursday morning near the Zebediela weighbridge in the Waterberg district.
LIMPOPO – Four people died while several others were seriously injured after a SUV and a truck collided along the N1 south on Thursday (December 2).
Media liaison officer for the Department of Transport and Community Safety Mike Maringa, said it is reported that the SUV carrying 10 occupants collided into the rear of the truck killing four people on impact.
According to ER24’s Ineke van Huyssteen a further eight people were injured in the incident. She explained that ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene shortly before 01:00 to find the front-end of the vehicle stuck underneath the rear of a truck.
“Upon further assessment, it was found that four people were entrapped in the vehicle. Unfortunately, all four of them had sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene.
“Two other patients were found to have sustained critical injuries and were immediately provided with advanced life support interventions before they were transported to hospital.”
She added that six other people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate. ‘The patients were treated on the scene and transported to hospital by various other medical services who attended to the scene.”
Maringa confirmed to Review that the driver was among the people injured in the collision.
MEC Mavhungu Lerule has sent her condolences to the families of the deceased and cautioned drivers to adhere to the rules of the road this festive season. She further cautioned motorists to not overload their vehicles.
Meanwhile in the Capricorn district a man in his 40s sustained critical injuries after two vehicles collided along the R37 near Chuenespoort on Tuesday evening.
According to Ineke van Huyssteen, an ER24 multimedia journalist, the paramedics arrived on the scene at around 20:00 to find a heavily wrecked vehicle with the driver still entrapped. Members of the fire department used the jaws of life to extricate the man from the wreckage, she added. “Upon assessment the man was found to have sustained critical injuries and was treated on the scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care.”
She concluded that two other people sustained minor injuries during the incident and were transported to hospital by the Provincial EMS. The exact circumstances surrounding both incidents will form part of a police investigation.
