POLOKWANE – The six teenagers and two adults accused of the murder of Thorisho Themane, have heard their fate. 

The trial finally resumed on Monday (December 6) after it was previously postponed twice due to Covid-19 cases.

Two adults and six teens appeared in the Limpopo High Court: Polokwane Division today (December 8) for the in-camera trial where deputy judge president Violet Semenya ruled that four of the six teens are guilty of murder. The remaining two teenagers were found guilty of assault, while the two adults were found guilty of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

According to National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, the matter was postponed to February 24, 2022 for pre-sentencing.

The murder of Themane grabbed national headlines in February 2019, because a video emerged on social media showing how his lifeless body was carried by the alleged minor suspects.

Eleven people were initially charged with his murder of which two of the accused are adults, while the other nine were minors at the time. One of the minors passed away before the matter was moved to the Limpopo High Court and three of the remaining minors have since turned state witness.
