APD celebrates Disability Rights Awareness Day
The Association for Persons with Disability (APD) in Polokwane celebrated National Disability Rights Awareness Day with their residents on December 3.
POLOKWANE – The event saw residents perform various traditional musical acts and dance to local songs to bring more excitement on the day.
Barbara Weale, housemother at APD, said it was important to celebrate the day.
‘“We decided to stage a party for them and give them an opportunity to sing and dance because music is stimulating and that is what they need.’’
She urged residents to not treat disabled persons like outcasts but like one of their own.
“People with disabilities are not objects of charity, they have the same rights and dignity as everyone. We want them to be fully recognised and they must be accepted in society.”
