Una (13) an epitome of hard work and dedication
With a big smile and stars in her eyes, Una Daswa shows her colourful product that came from hard work and dedication.
POLOKWANE – 13-year-old Una Daswa boasts a colourful dress she designed and sewed by herself and smiles when she admits designing is her plan B. “I actually want to become a famous singer or professional artist.” She just completed Gr 7 at Curro Heuwelkruin and goes to a sewing class twice a week. Her teacher, Phindulo Munyai, teaches her the finer details of design and after two-and-a-half hours behind the sewing machine, Una created something special.
“My cousins and I played around with designs and I loved what we came up with. Last year my mom bought me a sewing machine. I started to make small items like headbands, which sell really well. My biggest project so far was the shirt I designed for my mom. It took a few weeks to finish and I am thankful for her support.”
She loves to use bright colours and experiment with various materials, cuts, and designs. Una recently showcased some of the items she made at the first Polokwane Scout Group Christmas Market.
She’s been a scout since she was in Gr 2 and when her family relocated from Johannesburg to Polokwane, she decided to join the club in the city.
“My friends were scouts and I went to a few meetings with them. I soon realised I like it and became a scout myself. Being a scout helps me to relax and forget about school for a while. I don’t participate in any sport and only sing in the choir, so being part of the scouts is my extramural activity.”
Una’s mom, Olga, says she wears her daughter’s designs with pride.
“I am delighted with her work and dedication. It is heart-warming to see her happy and succeed.”
