Makhado Air Force Base gets new commander

Brigadier General Lancelot Mathebula replaces Brigadier General Russel Barends as the new General Officer Commanding of Air Force Base Makhado.

LIMPOPO – The Makhado Air Force Base has a new general on the block.

Members of the base and guests welcomed Brig Gen Lancelot Mathebula who was officially appointed as the new General Officer Commanding of Air Force Base Makhado.

Mathebula replaced Brig Gen Russel Barends as GOC in April this year, but was only officially handed the baton during the Change of Command parade held at the base on Friday, December 3.

Mathebula joined the Air Force Base Makhado in 2000, where he continued to progress in pursuing his dreams of becoming a fighter pilot. In 2009 his dream became a reality when he qualified as a flight leader, flying the Hawk MK120 trainer aircraft.

Barends said that Air Force Base Makhado was renowned for its discipline and he was confident that the reins were in competent hands.

He encouraged members of the air force to continue doing the good work they do in their communities and maintain a good working relationship with traditional leaders as they operate in their areas.

He said Mathebula had earned this promotion as he had worked very hard for it.

“I am hopeful and confident that he will continue serving his country with diligence.”

In his acceptance speech, Mathebula said he was humbled by the level of support shown by officers at his appointment. He said he was prepared to accept the challenge and take the bull by the horns. True leadership, he said, started at home.

“One had to be able to lead one’s family well in order to lead others, and the support of one’s family was obviously very important. “If you cannot lead, you cannot command, and if you cannot command, you cannot lead,” he said.

Female Combat Pilot for the SAAF Maj Mandisa Mfeka, who also attended the parade, welcomed Mathebula’s appointment and urged him to continue protecting the country’s hard-earned democracy.

“Let us all stand up and work towards the development of our communities,” she said.
