Two bakkies spotted in the Limpopo River

The suspected stolen bakkies were intercepted by members of the SANDF.

LIMPOPO – There are some places a 4×4 vehicle cannot go. These places include through the strong current of the mighty Limpopo River, luckily for SANDF members.

On December 13, their officers stationed at the Echo-Station 2 on the eastern side of the Beitbridge Port of Entry saw two men who tried to cross the river in suspected stolen motor vehicles.

According to a statement by Captain Moses Semono of the SANDF, the bakkies with a combined value of over R1.2m were intercepted. “Police were activated to recover the vehicles from the river and subsequently handed over to SAPS,” he explained.

Review contacted police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the incident, but said no arrests were made. “I am told they ran away into the other side [of the border],” he added.

Lieutenant Colonel Seitebatso Block told Review: “No arrests were made during this operation. The SAPS did confirm that these were stolen vehicles.”

In a separate incident, Semono explained that another vehicle was recovered from the river today (December 15).

“Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo members recovered yet another expensive vehicle valued at more than half a million rand. The members of 4 Artillery Regiment were on foot patrol on the northern side of Echo Station 1, when a luxury SUV drove past our soldiers at a high speed,” his statement reads.

Semono added that their members gave chase on foot and when the driver saw that he was being chased, he drove straight into the Limpopo River. “But because the vehicle was not meant to float like a boat, it got stuck as it is shown in the photographs. A member of a tracking company arrived on the scene and arranged for a towing company to recover the vehicle from the river. The SAPS took over the situation,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Semono’s earlier statement added that the SANDF on the western side of Dongola Kop managed to confiscate illicit cigarettes valued at almost R300 000.

“More illicit cigarettes were confiscated at the Beitbridge Port of Entry. The cigarettes, valued at R729 155 were confiscated after a joint operation by members of the SAPS Dog Unit and the SANDF. A vehicle valued at R350 000 that the cigarettes were transported in, was also confiscated,” he concluded.
