[LISTEN] Limpopo: Taxi drivers in the spotlight

Limpopo traffic officials have impounded eight taxis in two separate incidents.

LIMPOPO – Traffic officials in the province are clamping down on illegal public transport operators, according to Transport Department spokesperson Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala.

Moremi-Taueatsoala said, through their roadblocks conducted with SAPS, the department is able to make public transport safer.

He said this in a statement after seven taxis were impounded in Blood River for operating without permits.

Transport MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya emphasised that these roadblocks will help to ensure that provincial roads are safer to all.

“We express our appreciation to all traffic officers who work tirelessly to keep our roads safe,” she said earlier after a taxi was impounded on the N1.

Moremi-Taueatsoala’s earlier statement indicated that the taxi was impounded near Mokopane for transporting 12 more passengers than the allowed limit.

“Limpopo traffic officers found that the driver transported 28 passengers, more than the 16 allowed, without an operating license,” he concluded.
