R578 claims six lives in less than 24 hours

Among those killed, in two separate incidents, is a one-year-old boy.

LIMPOPO – Six people have died in two separate incidents on the R578 near Mbokota village in the Vhembe district.

The fatal incidents occurred less than 24 hours from each other and has left Transport MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya concerned.

In a statement by media liaison officer Mike Maringa, it is said the latest incident was a collision between a minibus and sedan earlier this morning.

“It is alleged that the minibus taxi had brake failure, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided side-swipe with the sedan. A one-year-old baby was confirmed dead on the scene while his mother and three other passengers escaped with serious injuries,” he explained.

Maringa said five people were killed in a separate incident on the same stretch of road.

“A truck allegedly had brake failure and crashed into four motor vehicles. The driver and four passengers of a hatchback were killed instantly while a driver and two passengers from another vehicle escaped with serious injuries,” he added.

Lerule-Ramakhanya sent messages of condolences to the families of the deceased.

“The three accidents reported today could have been avoided if motorists heeded to our call to inspect their vehicles and ensure that they are roadworthy. We are still expecting traffic volumes to increase overnight, and we urge all road users to comply,” she concluded.
