Stay healthy and snack on these

Nutritionist Katlego Baloyi shares some easy to make snacks for the kids.

POLOKWANE – Keep the ice cream and chocolates away this festive season with these easy to make snacks for the kids.

Nutritionist Katlego Baloyi says getting kids to consume healthy snacks does not have to be a daunting task, as long as you keep the process fun. Katlego adds that the make-or-break of kids eating healthy, is the way the food looks.

“If the food does not look appealing to them, they will not eat it. Make sure you try and add some colour and taste,” he explains.

Katlego says getting the children involved in the food making process, might also be a way to get them excited about the healthy snacks. “Children love being part of the process and if they help making the food, they tend to be more interested in eating it too,” he adds.

Snacks to make:

• Vegetable face: Create a smiley face on a plate by using cucumber as the eyes and mouth and vegetables like a sliced carrot or tomato as a nose.

• Healthy sandwich: swop the white or brown bread of a traditional sandwich with Provita or whole-wheat biscuits. Add some cheese and tomato in between to complete the sandwich.

• Smoothies: Avoid fizzy drinks this festive season and rather opt for smoothies. Simply throw any pieces of fruit, some ice cubes and plain yoghurt into a blender and enjoy. For a smoothie with some added brain power, blend milk, peanut butter and some ice cubes together.

• Bowl of yum: Mix various type of fruits such as kiwi, banana, grapes, berries, apple and pineapple in a bowl and drizzle some flavoured yogurt on top.

Fresh apple cut into thin strips to resemble fries.

• Trick the young ones: Take fresh apples ad slice them into very thin strips. If they are young enough, they will think they are restaurant fries.
