Woman (41) dead, teen injured in R71 crash
The road was temporarily closed to allow forensics to complete their investigation.
LIMPOPO – A woman has lost her life after a vehicle overturned along the R71 on Thursday (January 13).
The incident happened along Magoebaskloof pass outside Tzaneen around 07:00.
According to Mike Maringa, the media liaison officer for the Department of Transport and Community Safety, the vehicle overturned after it crashed into a tree.
“A 41-year-old woman died while an 18-year-old girl sustained minor injuries.”
The road was temporarily closed to allow forensics to complete their investigation. Speeding was cited as the possible cause of the incident, Maringa added.
This incident comes almost a week after a family of four were injured in a traffic incident along the same stretch of road.

According to a statement issued by ER24 the vehicle overturned along the R71 Magoebaskloof pass last Saturday.
A father, mother, an infant and a young boy sustained minor to moderate injuries in the incident.
ER24’s multimedia producer Ross Campbell explained that the young boy was seated on the back of the bakkie and reportedly jumped from the vehicle before it rolled. “The father, believed to be in his late 30s/early 40s, also suffered moderate injuries while the mother, believed to be in her 30s and also pregnant, suffered minor injuries.”
An infant who was seated in the front with the mother was uninjured in the incident.

With the recent spate of road accidents in the province, Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya continues to urge motorists to obey the rules of road. “Do not exceed the speed limit on national and provincial roads and inspect their vehicles before you embark on a road trip,” she urged.
