Musina Mayor appears in court for assault
Godrey Mawela is said to have been involved in an altercation at a tavern in Muswodi-Dipeni village on February 26 with Carris Munzhelele (25).
LIMPOPO – The Mayor of Musina Godrey Mawela appeared in the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on February 28 on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He is said to have been involved in an altercation at a tavern in Muswodi-Dipeni village on February 26 with Carris Munzhelele (25). Mawela was arrested and urgently applied for bail the same day, where he was granted bail at R3 000.
Details of what had led to the fight are yet to be confirmed, but Munzhelel’s mother, Rendani Mavundadavhi, told CV she was surprised to be woken up by her son who had apparently sought refuge at his parents’ house in the early hours of the morning.
“When he arrived at our home injured, we took him to the Muswodi-Dipeni Police Station to ask for transportation to the hospital, but the police took us back home to find out what happened.”
She claims that the mayor and a few other men arrived at her house and verbally abused her in the presence of police officers. “I was disappointed that a dignified figure like the mayor was still at a tavern at 03:00 in the morning fighting with a young man and ganging up with a group of men,” said Mavundadavhi.
She added that she was concerned about their safety and therefore had to approach the court to get a protection order against Mawela.
The spokesperson for the ANC in Vhembe, Gumani Mukwevho said they were supposed to meet with Mawela after his court appearance, “we will issue a statement very soon”.
Donald Selamolele, spokesperson for the Limpopo ANC said they were waiting for the regional office in Vhembe to address them on the matter.
Limpopo police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that the police in Muswodi arrested a 39-year-old man for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at a local liquor outlet in Muswodi on Saturday, February 26.
Musina Municipality spokesperson, Wison Dzebu said the municipality cannot comment on the matter.
The case was postponed to April 29.
By the time of going to print Mawela was still in a meeting and could not comment on the matter.
