“We also encourage our councillors through the ward committees to speak and mobilise with the households in their villages,” said Maluleke who was counted by Statistic SA officials at his home in Xikundu village on March 7.

He explained that the census helps the government when they conduct their Integrated Development Plan. “We as local municipalities must know how many people need which services, as well as how we will address their challenges in terms of service delivery.”

Maluleke told the media that the questions asked by officials were relevant in terms of addressing challenges that affect the people. Stats SA Vhembe district manager Shandukani Nemauluma said Census 2022 was progressing well in his region. He added that over 3 000 enumerators have been contracted within his region and that they are hard at work to ensure they visit all households.

Counting started on March 3 and Nemauluma said they aim to finish on March 20 and that the census is important for planning purposes, policy making, distribution of service delivery, better planning for intervention programmes and projects to better the people’s lives. He added that it is important that a country should know the number of people who live in it, in order to manage and distribute the country’s resources equitable.

“We call for all within the borders of South Africa to participate in the big count. Open your gates to our fieldworkers and give them credible information,” he said.

Hosi Thomas Musinyani Maluleke, the traditional leader of Xikundu village, was also visited by census officials on March 7. He too encouraged his communities to get counted.
