Northern Academy learners gear up for a weekend of action-packed sports

AUDIO: Rugby, netball and hockey teams from Northern Academy will travel to Gauteng on March 20 as part of the school's winter sport and league programme.

POLOKWANE – The head of sport at Northern Academy Oliver Moorcroft said all teams participating in their upcoming tour to Gauteng are looking forward to their respective games.

“We had played a few rugby matches over the weekend with local schools in Polokwane which formed part of our winter sport programme. Our athletes are ready and we hope to win all the matches in various sporting codes,” he said.

Willy Manyaka, captain of the school’s rugby team, said they are aiming to win all the matches of the tour. “We will be the underdogs but we are looking forward to the challenge. We beat the odds last year and we can probably do it again this year.”

Netball captain, Sade Hartlief said they are excited to showcase their sporting talent. “We have been waiting to be able to play sports regularly every weekend. The aim is to win at the tour and we have prepared well for all the matches,” she said.

Meanwhile, Moorcroft said they are proud of 16-year-old Fortunate Morudu who represented the school at the national athletics meet at the Germinston Athletics stadium on March 17.

The Gr 11 athlete said he is hoping to come back home with a gold medal. He lined up against other top athletes from various schools in the country in the 100m and 1 500 m events.

“It is my first major national event. My family and the school are happy for me and I just need to make them proud. I have been working hard since the beginning of the athletics season. I am in top form and I am more than ready for the event,” Morudi said.

Moorcroft said Morudi has been performing well and is one of the school’s top athletes.
