POLOKWANE – June 16th marks the commemoration of Youth Day which reflects on the events of the 1976 uprisings in Soweto.
Events are usually hosted in the spirit of displaying gratitude for the courage and bravery shown by the youth of 1976.
As a country, the day is celebrated to give recocgnotion to those who fought for better education for all.
The Polokwane Review spoke to the youth to find out how they celebrate the day.
Boitumelo Madibana: I will be celebrating Youth Day at work, where we will have a programme honoring young people and engaging with them in our communities. Giving to the less fortunate and commemorating the history that has brought us all to the day of June 16 will be part of the programme.Mohale Mabulana: Instead of wearing a school uniform, I will wear black and white as a formality to commemorate the lives of our brothers and sisters who were killed in the Soweto massacre. I will also give to underprivileged children and attend a youth-themed concert later in the day.Lonwabo Keswa: I believe that obtaining an education and staying on track with my studies is by far the best way for me to commemorate Youth Day since I will be honoring the hopes that the youth of 1976 had when they fought for better education.David Sebopetsa: I don’t think the sentiments around Youth Day have changed because we continue to hold events in honour of those who died to make this day possible.
