Youth Day message from Mogalakwena Local Municipality mayor

Mogalakwena Local Municipality Mayor encourages young people to participate in the economy, voter registration, and community development this Youth Month.

Today, we honour the brave young people of 1976 who stood up against injustice and fought for their right to quality education and equality. As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic Soweto Uprising, we reflect on their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination that helped shape the democratic South Africa we enjoy today.

This year’s National Youth Month theme, “RESET@50: The Future Calls,” challenges us to celebrate the legacy of the youth of 1976 while empowering a new generation to take their place as leaders, innovators, and agents of positive change.

As a nation, and as a community, we celebrate National Youth Day on June 16 2026, in recognition of the significant role young people played in the struggle against apartheid and their continued contribution to building a better South Africa.

Youth Month provides us with an opportunity to remember the bravery of those who came before us and to reaffirm our commitment to investing in the future of our young people.

The freedom we enjoy today lives in every generation. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that young people are equipped with the knowledge, skills, opportunities, and support they need to thrive.

Education, innovation, entrepreneurship, and active citizenship remain essential tools for social and economic transformation.

I therefore encourage the youth of Mogalakwena to actively participate in building an inclusive economy, strengthening their communities, and contributing meaningfully to the development of our municipality.

Let us strive to be a generation guided by integrity, excellence, and a shared vision of a prosperous Mogalakwena that we can all be proud of.

As Mogalakwena Local Municipality, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting youth development through programmes and initiatives that create opportunities, promote skills development, and empower young people to reach their full potential.

As we commemorate Youth Month, I further encourage our young people to exercise their democratic rights by participating in the upcoming voter registration process for the local government elections later this year. By doing so, they will have an opportunity to shape their future and play an active role in strengthening local governance and democracy.

On this Youth Day, let us honour the legacy of 1976 not only through remembrance but through action. Together, let us empower our youth, inspire hope, and build a brighter future for generations to come.

Happy Youth Day.
