Maphefo’s soul food feeds children

Nothing fulfils local philanthropist Maphefo Mopane's soul more than seeing beaming smiles on the faces of children from impoverished backgrounds and child-headed families.

POLOKWANE – Mopane is the managing director at Tsebo Multipurpose Centre outside the city, and wakes up at 06:00 every day to cook nutritious soft porridge and fresh soup for these children, as well as the unemployed community members.

The 33-year-old mother of two said the centre does not only cater for underprivileged children but anyone who is in need of a meal.

She said most people are ashamed to come to the centre due to a fear of being stigmatised.

“Most are reluctant to make use of the centre because they are scared that people might perceive them differently. There is no need for them to be ashamed of their situation. We cater for everyone who is in need of meals.”

The centre was established in 2017 and caters to the needs of all needy children from surrounding areas.

Mopane said they established the centre after they realised that there is a large number of poor people who cannot afford a decent meal.

“The need was overwhelming and it was only befitting to reach out to them. We also provide children with lunch after school.”

She said the aim is to grow the centre and meet the needs of everyone.

“We currently cater for 206 community members from the area. We will love to see more community members make use of the centre.”

They plan to host a Christmas party for the beneficiaries in December. “The Christmas party is one of our biggest plans but will be determined by the regulations as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. If all goes well, we look forward to a great spectacle.”
