One learner might retain information and study in a way that is not very effective for their classmate, or they might excel in a different area in school than their friends.
While some learners might achieve wonderful things in arts and creative writing, their best friend or fellow classmate might find mathematics, science and technical subjects more fun to participate in.
Taking the initiative to understand what learners would like to see more of in their school can help teachers and parents to understand learners’ interests and guide schools to provide top-quality learning opportunities.
It will also provide a safe platform for learners to experiment in new skills and hobbies in an academical environment they are exposed to and feel safe in.
Review asked learners what they would like their school to have in 2023 that it did not have in 2022:
Makopa Maponya: I wish the school would allow us to bring cellphones to school and have more sports practices to make sure that players are physically fit and motivated throughout the competition seasons.Rinae Sikhitha: Since I like nature so much, I think if our nature club could be exposed to more trips to nature reserves. That way, we could learn and explore a lot more about how to protect and take care of the environment and understand nature phenomenons.Mfuwo Bungeni: I would like my school to consider adding more sporting codes, such as rugby and archery so that we can have a lot of options to choose from. Some learners do not participate in any sports at the moment because we don’t like the ones that are available at our school.Leago Marokane: It would be nice and beneficial to me and my fellow schoolmates to have a mental health group or programme at our school so that we can learn how to take care of our mental health and know how to balance our many activities such as sports and academics.
