Joyful concert for music lovers to be hosted in Polokwane

The University of Limpopo is hosting an Orchestra Music Concert at the Dutch Reformed Church Pietersburg-Oos at 100 Jones Street on April 2 starting at 15:00.

POLOKWANE – The visiting professor of music and vice president of academic affairs at Crown College, Minnesota, USA, Dr Christopher Mathews will conduct an Orchestra Music Concert at the Dutch Reformed Church Pietersburg-Oos on Sunday (April 2).

The concert will be hosted by the University of Limpopo (UL) from 15:00.

UL is the reigning champion of the South African Tertiary Institutions in the gold category and according to UL’s Prof Thabe Matsebatlela, Matthews will also conduct music master classes, train singers in vocal production workshops and coach choir conductors in choir conducting clinics during his visit to the university.

On Sunday, the Schubert Mass in G will be performed by the UL choristers and South African Dancing Voices accompanied by a full orchestra under the baton of Mathews.

Dr Christopher Mathews, Professor of Music and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Crown College, Minnesota, USA will be the conductor during the Schubert Mass Concert.

According to Matsebatlela, the Mass in G is a phenomenal great work of six movements composed by an 18 year old Franz Peter Schubert in 1815.

“The Mass will revive spirits, inject energy with emotional devotion, ending with a journey to the cross as we enter the Easter period with Agnus Dei (Lamb of God).

The “Kyrie Eleison” (Lord have mercy) will open the Mass with warm sunlight, followed by a triumphant “Gloria”, a hypnotic “Credo”, the majestic “Sanctus”, the profound glorification of “Benedictus”, ending the Mass with “Agnus Dei” a peaceful remembrance of the Lamb of God,” Matsebatlela said.

Mathews will also bring an invigorating spell of American music that will be celebrated alongside a South African repertoire. The concert will premiere “How can I keep from singing”, a joint collaboration piece showcasing a fusion of American and South African musical minds building bridges across continents through a song, Matsebatlela added.

“This is a true celebration of two worlds coming together to celebrate music in Limpopo Province and an opportunity not to be missed,” Matsebatlela promised.

Entry fee is R150 per person and includes a complimentary CD album of locally produced music that received South African Music Awards nominations.
