Ensure the safety of your vehicle and passengers this Easter

Car maintenance is of utmost importance when taking on the open road and by maintaining your vehicle, you not only save you and your family's life, but other motorists and passengers' too.

POLOKWANE – With families and friends celebrating the Easter weekend together, the province’s roads will be busy with cars, buses and taxi’s transporting holiday goers.

This might mean traveling on busy roads no matter what time you travel.

Car maintenance is of utmost importance when taking on the open road and by maintaining your vehicle, you not only save you and your family’s life, but other motorists and passengers’ too.

Maintaining your car also means you avoid having to replace or repair anything unexpectedly.

Here are some tips for travelling safely this Easter weekend:

• Make sure your tyres are in a good state to get you safely to your destination.
• Raining makes driving difficult, therefore, make sure your wipers are in excellent condition.
• Lights ensure visibility on the road whether during the day or at night. Make sure the light covers are not cracked and the bulb is still bright. At the same time, make sure your indicator lights are in a working state.
• Even if it is very unlikely for the safety belt to tear or break, check if there is a weak area that might cause trouble.
• Make sure your car’s oil and water levels are correct when you fill your car up.

In case of an accident, Khell van der Lith from Fred’s Towing gives the following advice to motorists:

“If you were in an accident and can make calls, phone your insurance who will send roadside assistance. Alternatively you can call me and I will call your insurance. You can also call 112 who will then send the correct emergency services to the scene.”

If you pass a collision and you are unable to stop and help, van der Lith suggests moving on and call emergency services.

“If you can help, you should still call emergency services and attend to the patient. Stay on the scene until the services arrive. By now I think everyone in the city knows a tow truck driver or someone else they can call,” he said.
