How families in Polokwane celebrate Easter

The Polokwane Observer asked residents about the unique ways they normally mark the Easter weekend in their homes.

POLOKWANE – Each family has a unique way in which they celebrate Easter, whether as friends or as a family, and they all look forward to doing so.

When it comes to celebrating Easter, families may have different customs.

Easter is the oldest Christian holiday where people commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Good Friday, which is on the first Friday in April, kicks off the Easter weekend, which also includes Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday, when many people continue to celebrate their faith to the Christian religion.

The Polokwane Observer asked residents about the unique ways they normally mark the Easter weekend in their homes.

Thabiso Manganye: In my family, we normally gather together and slaughter livestock to celebrate and enjoy the day.
Ponthso Mashalwane: We visit cemeteries, clean the graves of our loved ones and then have lunch together as a family to enjoy the day and be appreciative for one another.
Girlvonia Madibana: My family attends church in the morning but prior to Easter Sunday, we observe a week-long fast. On Easter Sunday we celebrate with songs of praise and prayer at church before returning home to enjoy lunch with family and friends.
Stephen Mamabolo: My family goes to a Roman Catholic church where we celebrate Easter by fasting for a week and only eating fish instead of meat. After church, we break the fast with lunch.
Mudau Pfadzani: My family and I are members of the Apostolic church, which observes and celebrates Easter with a night vigil the night before Easter. Following the vigil, we return home and prepare feasts in honor of the day.
