POLOKWANE – For Chantelle Vogel focusing on her passion and skills to make a mark in a male dominated industry is of utmost importance.
Chantelle, a local tattoo artist is not threatened by being one of a few female tattoo artists in the city, however, she understands that it comes with its own challenges.
Chantelle, who was previously a purchasing manager in the corporate world, had a love for art and realised she wanted to do something that was more her passion than a nine-to-five job and that’s when she started pursuing her journey as a tattoo artist.
Not only is she an artist and a mother, but also an acrylic artist and participates in shooting on the side, making her a Jill of all trades.
“It can be demanding to manage time between artistic work and parenting duties but finding a supportive network and establishing a well-structured routine can help alleviate some of these challenges” she says.
Chantelle says nature provides an escape for her and when she needs inspiration or is fatigued, she has a place to go.
She is now venturing into realism tattoos and mentions her favourite types of tattoos are florals.
Chantelle says persuing a career as a tattoo artist can be both rewarding and creatively fulfilling and gives the following tips to aspiring artists:
“The most common path to becoming a tattoo artist is through an apprenticeship. Look for a reputable tattoo shop or artist willing to take you under their wing as this provides a hands-on experience, guidance and the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals,” she said.

“Tattooing involves working with needles and potentially hazardous materials. Learn about proper sanitation, sterilization and safety procedures to prevent infection and ensure the well-being of your clients. Compliance with health regulations is crucial.”
Business Skills:
“Being a successful tattoo artist involves more than just creating great art. Develop basic business skills such as customer service, pricing, appointment scheduling and marketing. Building a strong reputation and attracting clients is key to a thriving career.”
Continuous Learning:
“Stay up-to-date with industry trends and continue learning to keep your skills fresh and innovative.”
Patience and Perseverance:
“Becoming a skilled tattoo artist takes time and dedication. Be prepared for challenges and setbacks along the way. Patience, perseverance, and a strong work ethic are essential for achieving your goals.”
