Weather service issues heat advisory warning for Polokwane

POLOKWANE – The South African Weather Service has issued a heat advisory warning for Polokwane that will be in effect until Thursday.

Hot temperatures are expected in the city today and tomorrow with maximum highs of 33ºC and 34ºC, respectively while the warning will end of Thursday at 23:59.

The weather service says heat exhaustion, heat stroke and dehydration may be experienced due to the high temperatures and warns residents to stay hydrated by drinking water, limit outdoor activities (especially at the hottest time of the day) and to remain in the shade if possible.

Hot temperatures are expected to continue in next week with some relief in the form of rain next weekend, however, conditions and forecasts may change.

Tips for managing high temperatures

Heat can affect your health more than you might think.

Prolonged exposure to hot temperatures can lead to worsening of heart problems, respiratory difficulties and can also cause heatstroke.

• Stay well hydrated by drinking a lot of water.
• Keep a close eye on babies, the elderly and children. Ensure they stay well hydrated as well.
• Remember to ensure pets have a cool place to relax and cool clean water to drink as well.
• Try to stay out of direct sunlight.
• Wear the appropriate clothing and ensure you use sunscreen.
• Limit participation in outdoor activities. If you plan on participating in outdoor activities, ensure you rest and keep hydrated.
• If you are going to spend time in a pool, ensure your safety and that of children around you. Ensure that they are supervised while around and in the pool.
• Do not leave children and pets in a vehicle even with a window open.
