Polokwane Municipality imposes fines on water misuse

The Polokwane Municipality recently announced a R1000 fine to anyone found to misuse water.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality will impose a R1 000 fine to anyone found to misuse water, it was recently announced.

The use of a hose pipe or irrigation system, washing of paving and open areas in residential areas, as well as by business and industry is prohibited.

Last Wednesday, spokesperson Thipa Selala issued a poster encouraging locals to save water by using: A bucket over a hose or spray to wash a vehicle or water plants. “Using a garden hose takes up as much as 30 litres of water per minute,” he said.

A filled plastic bottle when flushing the toilet to reduce the volume of water used. “Reducing the toilet flush volume alone can save 20% of total water consumption. This can be done by putting a 2 litre cold drink bottle, filled with water and a little sand to add weight into the cistern.”

Grey water must be used to flush toilets and for gardening.
