Workplace anxiety is climbing rapidly

Workplace anxiety involves the feeling of being stressed and having anxiety about job performance.

POLOKWANE – Feelings of stress and tension regarding the work place are not uncommon. However, if these feelings are continuous and are affecting your quality of life and work performance, it might be worth considering speaking to a professional as you might be suffering from workplace anxiety.

Workplace anxiety involves the feeling of being stressed, nervous and having anxiety about job performance, interactions with co-workers and speaking in front of a group.

Although this is not uncommon, it can have negative effects and might be an indication of disorders like social anxiety disorder, panic disorders and post traumatic stress disorder.

Registered counselor, Pearl Ramotshedisi said that when you go through such feelings, it might help to talk to someone about the where the anxiety stems from.

You might find that factors like working long hours, work overload and having a low reward system are at play, although not always the case. “If this is not addressed, it may affect job performance, job satisfaction and trickle into your personal life,” she explained.

She added that honest conversations with the employer might be necessary, although it is important to note that not all work places will be responsive.

Tips to cope with work place anxiety:
•Try to avoid triggers and people who make you feel worse.
•Avoid coping mechanisms that don’t help, such as substance abuse, binge eating or the over use of medication.
•Try to focus on the positive aspects about yourself and your job.
•Have a social life outside of work.
•If all else fails, change careers to something better suited to your needs.
