Father and son drown while fishing at dam in Limpopo
The man's other son stayed behind on the embankment where he remained overnight waiting for their return.
LIMPOPO – Double tragedy struck when both the 58-year-old Laxon Madzingira and his 28-year-old son, Effort Madzingira from Tshifulanani outside Thohoyandou drowned while fishing at Albasini Dam on Friday.
From what could be established, the father, accompanied by his two sons, set out on a boat to fish.
The other son, Spadon Madzingira stayed behind on the embankment. When they did not return, he was left waiting throughout the night with no information of their whereabouts.
When CV visited the scene, Madzingira’s son-in-law, Gilbert Muzuru said that they were struggling to come to terms with their sudden and tragic loss.
“We received the sad news from the son that accompanied them. He said it was heart-breaking, and he waited for them the whole night, but they never returned. His father had been a fisherman for years. We are just left with many questions about how it happened.”
According to Vhembe police spokesperson WO Vuledzani Dathi, the Makhado police were investigating the incident.
He confirmed that the body of the 28-year-old man was found by a resident who had gone to the dam to fish.
“Mr de Jager, also a fisherman, was removing the fishing nets from the water when he noticed the hand of a human. He then drove the boat closer.
“He contacted the local police station to report the incident and when we arrived at the dam, we retrieved the body from the water.”
The body was taken to the Elim government mortuary for an autopsy and further police investigations.
Dathi said the team, comprising the police, EMS workers and police divers were alerted that another body was spotted floating in the dam on Sunday. The body of the father was subsequently retrieved.
“No foul play is suspected, and we identified the victim as Laxon Madzingira. Further police investigations showed that the two deceased fishermen were father and son.”
