Mune brings confidence and joy with every haircut

The special thing about being a barber is having a chance to interact with clients and share some knowledge and wisdom, says Mune.

LIMPOPO – After struggling to find employment to cover all his bills, Munewazwothe Mabasa decided to make things happen for himself.

The 27-year-old from Ha-Magidi outside Makwarela township in Vhembe is the founder of Mune The Barberman in Thohoyandou Venda Office Park.

He attended Mbaleni Primary School and finished his secondary school education in Dengenya Secondary School.

Growing up as a boy from a rural area it was a must to play with others. He played football, and often went to the bush to catch some grasshoppers to have something to eat at night.

He said he started this journey of becoming a barber in 2020 during the pandemic.

“I have always had the desire to be a good barber while growing up, and I was very lucky to meet someone who showed me the ropes,” said Mabasa.

He said his secret to his success is working hard, day in and day out.

“I always tell myself that I am the best and I do not compete with my competitors, but focus on my own journey. After matric I went to Makwarela Vhembe TVET college, and studied diesel mechanics. I did not finish my diploma as I had already started cutting hair full time. It is a dream come true for me because my job is to do what I love and give my clients a clean haircut. I have travelled all over South Africa giving haircuts. I am also sure that Mune The Barberman will have branches and employ youths with a passion of becoming barbers,” he said.

He told CV that the plans that he has for the future motivate him to work harder than the day before.

“I often look up to barbers who have made it in life. I normally work six days a week, from 09:00 to 18:00. Every four months I take a four-days break to recover. The journey has been great. I also work with my childhood friend who is like a little brother to me and he does amazing art with tattoos. We have been on this journey since day one,” he said.

The special thing about being a barber is that you give your clients confidence and joy every time you give them a clean haircut, and it is a chance to interact with clients and share some knowledge and wisdom, he said.

“Focus on what you are doing and on your goal. Everything that you wish for is possible. I always try to educate my clients to have an understanding that for me to produce the best work they must allow me to work at my own pace. I do not rush my work just because there are clients outside,” he concluded.
