Stanford Lake College dominates in annual derby

Friday afternoon was a flurry of activity with debating, chess, tennis, hockey and netball matches played in all earnest.

POLOKWANE – On May 17-18, it was time for Stanford Lake College’s annual Derby against Penryn College.

Excitement had been building on campus throughout the week, and all the teams had worked hard for the big weekend.

Friday afternoon was a flurry of activity with debating, chess, tennis, boys’ hockey and netball matches played in all earnest.

SLC’s chess and tennis players were dominant and the senior debaters managed a hard-fought win.

The u/16 Badgers in general were a strong force throughout the weekend, however, the real highlight from Friday was the first netball girls who outplayed an otherwise strong Penryn team.

The weather on Saturday morning was perfect for the remaining Derby fixtures, with the u/14 girls hockey starting the day.

Again, the u/16 girls showed their dominance with an outstanding win, and the girls’ first team fought hard for their draw.

The u/16 rugby team pushed their Penryn counterparts very hard but, unfortunately, could not convert pressure into points.

Well done to all of the SLC teams and players for playing so well and representing the College. A huge thank you to all of the coaches for their hard work and to the parents who supported the weekend.

Stanford expresses their gratitude to the teams and coaches from Penryn who pushed the SLC players and gave them some brilliant competition.
